Cosmos Club Award Recipients

Archibald MacLeish

1977
Poet

Few men have enriched the culture of a nation as has Archibald MacLeish. He has played a leading role in the formation and execution of UNESCO policies, served as Librarian of Congress and Assistant Secretary of State, and engaged in innumerable learned activities. His versatility in a lifetime of writing about our society has made him one of America’s literary giants, the author of imperishable poetry, plays, articles, and history. On three separate occasions he has been awarded the Pulitzer prize, and he has received numerous other honors. He has combined the writing of belles lettres with a perceptive examination of our life and times. In recognition of his outstanding services to humanity, the Cosmos Club honors him and itself by the award of the Cosmos Club Award of 1977.
