American scientist, businessman, and genomics researcher. He is best known for his work on the human genome, specifically the first draft sequences, while also being the first to transfect a cell with a synthetic chromosome. He founded several genetic institutes for research. Awards include the Gairdner Award (2002), the Nierenberg Prize (2007), the Kistler Price (2008), the ENI award (2008), the Medal of Science (2008), the Dickson Prize (2011), the Dan David Prize (2012), the Leeuwenhoek Medal (2015). He was Time Magazine’s top 100 lists of most influential people in the world (2007 & 2008), the New Statesmen’s world’s 50 most influential figures (2010). He is a member of the American Philosophical Society and advisor to the USA Science and Engineering Festival.
