American civil and structural engineer and educator. Best known as the pioneer of the concept of structural art, a concept that engineering design is a creative discipline separate from architecture and defined by efficiency, economy, and elegance. Awards include the Dexter Prize (1979), the History and Heritage Awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers (1986), the Charles A. Dana Award (1990), and the Distinguished Teaching Scholar Awards from the National Science Foundation (2003). He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
