American journalist. He was best known as the founder of C-SPAN which provides cable coverage of the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, and other public affairs events. He also appeared frequently as an interviewer on those programs, including Washington Journal, Book notes, and Q&A, and then authored many books based on those interviews. Prior to his work at C-SPAN, he was a telecommunications policy staffer for the White House and D.C. Bureau Chief of Cablevision Magazine and The Media Report. Awards include the Cable Hall of Fame (2000), the National Press Club’s Fourth Estate Award (2002), the National Humanities Medal (2002), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2007), and the Lone Sailor Award from the U.S. Navy Memorial (2011).
