The Cosmos Club is proud to present the 52nd Cosmos Club Award to molecular biologist Dr. Carol W. Greider in recognition of her pioneering research on the structure of chromosome ends and the discovery of telomerase, a protein that maintains the length and integrity of chromosome ends and is critical for the health and survival of all living cells and organisms.
This work carried out in collaboration with Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn and Dr. Jack Szostack, resulted in the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 2009. The practical result of the discovery of telomerase has led to the development of cancer therapies and advances in treating age-related disease.
Dr. Greider is equally impressive in her commitment to encouraging women to pursue science as a career. She challenges the next generation to make their own discoveries and contributions to science.
