For nearly six decades, Gilbert F. White has excelled in education, scholarship, and public service. His influence is evident in his students, many of whom have risen to positions of leadership in specialties concerned with the human perception and use of resources, in his creative and penetrating thinking and writing, and in national and international policies and programs for managing river basin development, floods, drought, energy use, agriculture, and nuclear arms.
Gilbert White’s commitment to improving the human condition has blended high purpose, excellent science, international leadership, and inspiration to all who know him. His commitment has produced a precious legacy of improvements in the quality of our lives. Equally important, his example has strengthened the competence and the resolve of the world’s resource managers to confront the environmental problems that continue to face humankind.
In recognition of his outstanding achievements, the Cosmos Club, with great affection and pride, bestows the 1993 Cosmos Club Award upon one of its 50 year members, Gilbert Fowler White (’42).
