Foremost lady of the theatre in America, interpreter of character in numerous great stage, screen, and television plays, including portrayals of Mary of Scotland and Victoria Regina, winner of many honors including numerous honorary degrees, several foreign decorations, and the highest awards available for motion picture and television performances, holder of high offices in professional and social service organizations, Helen Hayes has taken her place among the leading performing artists of the world. It is now fitting that she returns to Washington, place of her birth and elementary education, to receive the Cosmos Club Award of 1975. The Club considers itself unusually honored in so recognizing this great lady of the performing arts.
