Cosmos Club Award Recipients

Jennifer Doudna

2024
Biochemist

The 2024 Cosmos Club Award was presented to Nobel Prize-winning biochemist and pioneer in the field of CRISPR gene editing Jennifer Doudna.

She  has made pioneering contributions to biochemistry and genetics. She is the Li Ka Shing Chancellor’s Chair Professor in the departments of Chemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and has been an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1997.

In 2020, she became one of the first women to share a Nobel Prize in the sciences, receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry alongside Emmanuelle Charpentier “for the development of a method for genome editing.” Her work with CRISPR has revolutionized genetic engineering, offering new possibilities for treating genetic disorders and advancing agricultural science.

Beyond her groundbreaking scientific achievements, she is the co-founder of several biotechnology companies and actively engages in discussions on the ethical implications of gene editing. She has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

In 2021, she was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people, and she continues to lead efforts in scientific research and innovation through her role as the Executive Director of the Innovative Genomics Institute. Her work not only shapes the future of medicine but also sparks critical conversations on the role of science in society.
