Eminent historian, dedicated teacher, and indefatigable researcher, John Hope Franklin for more than a half a century has shown an exceptional commitment to learning and historical truth. His broadly based scholar- ship has opened new vistas on many aspects of the history of the southern United States. His widely acclaimed writings have brought new under- standing of African American history and its importance in the entire fabric of American history. He has been a leader of the principal American historical societies and an ambassador in the exchange of ideas with people in many foreign lands. He has received numerous honorary degrees and other awards of achievement and distinction. He has had great success and satisfaction in what he has described as his efforts “to mine the various quarries of the past in the belief that good history is a good foundation for a better present and future.”
The Cosmos Club honors Dr. Franklin for the part that he has played in illuminating the role of African Americans in the mainstream of con- temporary scholarship and the affectionate respect and charm with which he employs the force of his historical writings. He gained fame for interpreting conditions in the South and linking them to events in the rest of the nation. Importantly, he demonstrates that the history of African Americans is an integral part of the American experience.
In recognition of his outstanding scholarship and contributions to the understanding of American culture, the Cosmos Club with great appreciation and pride bestows the 1994 Cosmos Club Award on one of its own members, John Hope Franklin.
