Jonathan Evans Rhoads has distinguished himself internationally as a surgeon, investigator, teacher, educator, author and editor, and as a wise advisor to his community and the nation.
He has combined outstanding national leadership in surgical medicine with exceptional dedication to education. Dr. Rhoads has advanced the field of cancer control and pioneered fundamental applications of physiological and nutritional principles to the care of surgical patients, especially the development of the principle and method of total parenteral nutrition for long-term patient maintenance.
Dr. Jonathan Rhoads, one of the greatest surgeons of our time, has contributed beyond that field to medicine in general and to education at all levels. He has taught a whole generation of international leaders in surgery and surgical education.
In recognition of these achievements, the Cosmos Club takes great pleasure in bestowing the 1997 Cosmos Club Award on Jonathan Evans Rhoads, an inspiring teacher, role model, wise counselor, pre- eminent leader in surgical medicine, tireless public servant and Cosmos Club member.
