As research scientist, practitioner, teacher, administrator, editor and writer, few can rival the breadth of medical and biological accomplishments of Lewis Thomas. Professor, department chairman and dean of major medical schools, president and chancellor of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, he has brought insight, common sense and humanity to medical teaching and research direction and his own basic research has lead to important advances in virology, immunology, experimental pathology and infectious disease. His sage counsel is sought by government, industry, universities and hospitals. Not the least of his contributions are two volumes of learned yet lucid and witty essays that explore and interpret for laymen the mysteries, philosophy and ethics of modem biology and medicine.
These myriad achievements of his distinguished career have brought him honorary degrees, literary and medical awards and membership in prestigious scientific and professional societies.
The Cosmos Club is proud to add the Nineteenth Cosmos Club Award for 1982 to the many honors that Lewis Thomas has received.
