American engineer. He specialized in failure analysis and the role it plays in successful design. He authored many books and articles for the American Scientist and Prism magazines. He was appointed twice to the United States Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the National Academy of Engineering. His awards include the John P. McGovern Award for Science (2014).
