Best known for developing technologies of hydrogel-tissue chemistry and optogenetics, as well as optical and genetic strategies to study the functioning of neurological and psychiatric diseases. Awards include Keio Medical Science Prize (2014), Albany Medical Center Prize (2015), BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award (2015), Breakthrough Prize Life Sciences (2016), Kyoto Prize (2018), Heineken Prize (2020), Albert Lasker Awards for Basic Medical Research (2021), and the Japan Prize (2023). He is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and the U.S. National Academy of Medicine.
