Oceanographer, underwater archeologist, and marine geologist. Best known for his discovery of the RMS Titanic, Bismark, and USS Yorktown, he preferred to be known for discovering hydrothermal vents which are the only ecosystem on Earth entirely not dependent on the Sun. Awards include the Kilby International Award (1994), The Explorer Medal (1995), the Hubbard Medal (1996), the James H. Shea Award (2000), and the Caird Medal (2002).
