Admiral of the U. S. Coast Guard. He is best known as the U. S. Coast Guard’s Commandant guiding the federal response to hurricanes Katrina and Rita off the Gulf Coats of the United States and as the National Incident Commander of the Unified Command for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill off that same coast. Awards include Homeland Security Distinguished Service Medal (2006 & 2010), Defense Distinguished Service Medal (2010), Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal (2005, 2006, 2010), Legion of Merit (2010), and the Meritorious Service Medal (2001, 2006, 2010). He is a fellow at the MIT Sloan School of Management, the National Academy of Public Administration, and The Homeland Security Advisory Panel.
